Heavy-lift transport and drone cleaning: no cranes, no downtime
The two most underrated cost items of a solar plant are site logistics and dirt on the modules. Heavy-lift drones attack both: they carry panels and materials where cranes and trucks can't reach, and they wash the plant while it keeps producing.

01The problem: the last vertical mile
On an industrial roof, a ridge or a slope, the cost of getting the material into position often exceeds the cost of the material itself. A crane has to be hired, transported, assembled, and it needs manoeuvring space, permits and access roads. Where there is no road, you build one — days of preparation for hours of useful work.
A heavy-lift drone takes off from any pad, hooks the load with a winch and sling, and sets it down exactly where it's needed. No access road, no occupied ground, far fewer people working at height.
02What actually gets carried
- PV modules — carried onto the roof or the hillside, straight to the installation row.
- Structures and ballast — rails, triangles, mounting hardware, cabling.
- Batteries and components — where weight allows, optimising the cycles.
- Crew equipment — tools and consumables, without ladders and improvised hoists.
The benefit isn't only speed: it's safety. Every load that flies is a load nobody carries on their shoulder up a ladder or along a slope. Less manual handling at height means less risk and lower insurance costs.
03Aerial cleaning: yield recovered without downtime
Dirt costs money. Dust, pollen, droppings and agricultural residue cut a plant's output by 3% to 8% a year — more in dusty environments or near crops. Traditional cleaning needs ground crews, scaffolding or platforms, water trucks, and often shutting sections of the plant down.
The cleaning drone carries a tank, pumps and a spray bar with calibrated nozzles: demineralised water at controlled pressure, with no contact on the module and without stopping production. It's 3 to 5 times faster than a ground crew, and the plant stays on for the whole job.
04Where it pays off most
- Industrial and commercial roofs — where erecting the scaffolding costs more than the cleaning itself.
- Large ground-mount plants — washing cycles scheduled around the soiling seasons.
- Remote or rugged sites — ridges, slopes, islands: where getting a water truck there is the problem.
- Post-emergency — after hailstorms or sandstorms, fast production recovery.
Transport and cleaning share the same logic: replace hours of heavy logistics with minutes of flight. It's the margin a well-run plant takes back, one intervention at a time.
